AXA is the Dutch ring lock. Defender for the city bike, Imenso if you want a wider shackle, Solid when the frame is tight, Victory on many e-bikes. The key is small, the cylinder sits in the frame, the shackle goes through the rear fork. That is why we open AXAs more than any other brand: they are everywhere, they eat rain, and the key snaps in the cylinder.
Do not just wind it in
Buying an AXA in a bag and ‘just winding it in’ is how hubs bind and how the shackle sits on the rim. We fit it in the frame, with the right bolts, straight, so the wheel stays free. After cutting your old AXA the new one can sit in the same place.
AXA alone does not hold a bike to a pole
AXA alone is too light in the centre. It is a ring lock: it holds the rear wheel, not the whole bike to a pole. Combination: AXA in the frame plus a chain or U-lock through frame and lamppost. An ART sticker on the AXA only counts for the policy if the fit is right.
Key snapped in the cylinder
Lost the key to an AXA: do not force it. We open or cut the lock, not the fork. Then a new Defender or Imenso, measured on your frame. A photo of the old lock on WhatsApp is enough.
No fake AXA
Fakes we leave. If we have to open it later, we want to know what is in it. No surprise on the street.
