Buy an omafiets in Amsterdam
This whole page is the omafiets: step-through, a coat, a child on the back. Not a men’s bike, not a cargo bike.
Message about this omafietsStep-through is not a joke
Omafiets is not an insult. It is the step-through you swing over in a coat or with a child on your arm. You pedal upright. Groceries go on the rack. That is how a large part of Amsterdam moves — quieter than a cargo bike, kinder than a men’s bike if knees or a belly get in the way.
Miss Grace, Mambo, U4 ladies
We look for Gazelle Miss Grace or Orange ladies, Batavus Mambo, Cortina Common or U4 ladies, Union. Closed chain case, lights that work, a rack that carries a child seat without the frame cracking at the bolts.
Child seat: not every rack holds
Child seat: say so. Not every rack is built for a Yepp. We check whether the carrier and the welds hold. An omafiets that cracks at the seat is dangerous, not a bargain.
Electric or pedalling
Electric omafietsen (step-through with a mid-motor) are another animal: heavier, dearer, battery lock. Say if you want assist. This page is the ordinary omafiets; the e-bike has its own story.
Lock on an omafiets
Lock: ring lock in the frame plus, in the centre, a chain around the pole. An omafiets without a lock is gone in five minutes in this city, even if she ‘wasn’t expensive’.
Seat, size, budget
WhatsApp: omafiets, whether you need a seat, size/height, electric or not. We say what is in or that you should wait a week for the right Gazelle.
